The Feeling After a Vendor Meeting

There's a typical emotional arc after meeting with an AI solution vendor. The demo was impressive, the case studies were dazzling, and you felt excited about the possibilities — then you get back to the office and something feels hollow.

"But what exactly are we buying?"

This isn't because you're slow. It's because AI marketing is intentionally vague. Vague messaging looks like it fits more customers.

This article decodes the phrases vendors use most often. Once you know what to ask when you hear them, you can tell the difference between a genuine solution and one that's just well-packaged.

Common Phrases and Their Translations

"Enterprise-grade AI solution"

What it sounds like: A proven product used by major corporations.

What it might mean: It varies. Sometimes it genuinely has enterprise validation. Other times, it just means the price tag is high.

What to ask: "What specific criteria make this enterprise-grade? Do you have security certifications? Can we see references from enterprises currently using it in production?"

"Custom AI"

What it sounds like: Built specifically for our company.

What it might mean: Changing a few configuration settings on top of a generic product. True custom development has very different costs and timelines.

What to ask: "What's the scope of customization? Is it configuration changes, or model retraining? Will it learn from our data?"

"95% accuracy"

What it sounds like: It works almost perfectly.

What it might mean: The meaning changes entirely depending on the conditions, dataset, and metrics used to measure that 95%. The chances of the vendor's test environment accuracy matching your real environment are low.

What to ask: "What's the measurement criteria for 95%? What dataset was it measured on? Can we test with our own data?"

"Immediate ROI after deployment"

What it sounds like: Install it and results follow right away.

What it might mean: Product installation might be fast. But factor in data integration, user training, and workflow changes, and "immediate" doesn't exist.

What to ask: "How long does it typically take from deployment to actual operational use? What do we need to do on our end?"

"The AI learns on its own"

What it sounds like: Set it and forget it — it gets smarter over time.

What it might mean: Truly self-learning AI is extremely rare. Most require human feedback, new data input, or periodic retraining.

What to ask: "What does 'learning' look like specifically? Are there ongoing resources we need to invest?"

"No coding required — anyone can use it"

What it sounds like: Non-developers can use AI too.

What it might mean: Basic functions might work without code. But customizing it for your workflows or integrating with other systems often requires technical staff anyway.

What to ask: "Can you show us the boundary between what's no-code and what requires development?"

The Demo Trap

Vendor demos are always perfect. Of course they are — they're showing the scenario that works best.

Three things to watch for during demos.

First, check if the demo uses your data. The vendor's clean sample data and your company's actual data are completely different. Ask "Can we run this with our data?" If they decline, ask why.

Second, ask to see failure cases. Every AI has areas where it struggles. A vendor that can honestly show limitations is actually more trustworthy. "What cases does this AI get wrong or fail at?"

Third, ask about the gap between demo and production environments. Demos run under optimal conditions. What happens with many concurrent users? Dirty data? Slow networks? Performance under real-world variables is real performance.

What to Check in the Contract

Contract terms matter as much as technical evaluation.

Data ownership: Who owns the data you input and the results the AI generates? Make sure to verify: "Can the vendor use our data to train models for other customers?"

Termination terms: Can you get all your data back if you cancel? If data migration isn't possible, you're looking at lock-in — easy to enter, hard to leave.

SLA (Service Level Agreement): Are uptime, response speed, and incident response times specified in the contract? "It usually works fine" is not an SLA.

Pricing structure: Usage-based or flat rate? Hidden costs (data storage, API calls, additional users)? Hearing "1 million won per month" and receiving a 3 million won invoice is not uncommon.

Three Signs of a Good Vendor

Not every vendor exaggerates. There are signals that identify a good partner.

They lead with limitations. A vendor that openly tells you "it doesn't work well in these cases" genuinely knows their product.

They suggest a pilot. Instead of pushing an annual contract, a vendor that says "let's start with a small test" has confidence in their product.

They care about your problem. Instead of listing product features, a vendor that asks "What's your most urgent problem right now?" is focused on solving problems, not selling solutions.

It's Not About Not Being Fooled — It's About Judging Well

This article isn't about distrusting vendors. Good AI solutions and good vendors absolutely exist, and the right partner can dramatically accelerate your AI transformation.

But to make that judgment, you need to see past the marketing language to the substance beneath it. Admire the impressive demo, but don't forget the tough questions.
